NFL.com is reporting that Gene Upshaw, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and executive director of the NFL’s Players Association, died early Thursday morning after a bout with pancreatic cancer. He was 63
This is no doubt sad news. And will have a big impact on the NFL and the next collective bargaining agreement. But at Mike and the Mad Blog, we have to look at it from our perspective. Just how will his affect Mike Francesa? I mean, Mike and Tim Russert never made up before Russert passed. And Tim went to his grave with that knowledge. What was Gene Upshaw thinking about in his final moments? His last time on with Mike and Chris? How will his legacy be viewed in Mike's eyes? Stay tuned today to hear how Mike defines Gene Upshaw's legacy. It's the only opinion that counts.

"As everyone no doubt knows by now, Gene and myself didn't always see eye to eye. But a little birdie tells me he was a big fan of the show, so his family can be grateful for that. And years from now, maybe his son can say that Ken Stabler was at his father's funeral."

Question about Cyrus... I mean Sirius. How good is the reception get in Manhattan office buildings?
I can get FM fine and AM is decent (has a constant whistling sound that brainwashes me from working productively) in my office.
Considering how bad Fatso has been, I think I will jump into Sirius, but won't be worth it at all if Sirius doesn't work in the office.
If you could ask your readers, that would be awesome. Thanks and keep up the good work M&MB wrtiers!
you can get Sirius stream crystal clear over the internet
Also same with wfan on internet. Works fine, just a few minutes behind. Much better than constant ringing
my cheap ass firm frowns upon any streaming. i was warned twice about it already haha. Hence, having to deal with the old school transistor radio.
is sirius stream on the web free? or are there any sites that stream for free?
And, did i just hear Francesca is gonna hold open tryouts for WFAN?
Go down the shore, get shit-faced in the middle of the day, listen to "Southside", and become the next MadDog. You must be 22. W,tf.
A few people have gone to the grave hating Mike....
I'll never forget the Cory Lidle incident.
I wish I can find the audio for that interview.
Hey -
Any thought to opening up a paltalk room for this blog b/c the need to vent in real-time is only going to increase once both of them are back on the air next month...we could have a dueling pennant race scenario going with MMB readers with ears in both rooms...
Just a suggestion...I know I can't take this Yankee pep rally with Mike much longer. I hope the Sox bury them next week and when he's back on the Sept 2nd it's Mets and the NFL - Mike's better when he's rooting against the Mets anyway...
Over/Under on Bar-A tryouts: 12
On the FRAN, MRF 08.21
Somewhere among a vast pile of empty Diet Coke bottles and chewed-on headphone cords in a landfill somewhere are the Cory Lidle interview tapes.
Mike addresses Upshaw. He's apparently angry that people never told him that his buddy Gene was sick. He had no idea. shocking.
I think I have a copy of the Lidle interview somewhere on an old unhooked computer. I'll look for it and email it to the blog if I find it.
I actually emailed the FAN after the interview before the crash because of how rude they treated the guy, who obviously was just trying to explain himself. And he just said what every other Yankee veteran said - the team wasn't as ready as the Tigers.
Here are a few excerpts.
Russo: "First off, no Yankee fan should enjoy the day in New York ...
If I'm a Yankee right now I'm in hiding. I'm not enjoying any day in New York."
Lidle: "Hold on. I have friends in and I'm not allowed to go and enjoy this day in New York?"
Russo: "I don't know any Yankee fan who's enjoying the day, to be honest with you."
Lidle: "I want to win as much as anybody, but what am I supposed to do, go cry in my apartment for the next two weeks?"
Russo: "I know a lot of Yankees fans who are doing that, that's for sure."
Later Lidle told the hosts, "I'd like to meet you sometime and we can sit down and you guys can really get to know me instead of just what you think about me."
Francesa replied, "I haven't thought much about you at all, to be honest with you."
maybe if fatso read the sports pages once in a while he wouldnt have to have people tell him about someone getting cancer or whos closing for the mets these days. you cant blame anyone for lacking knowledge. the people that do that have far too large of an ego. oh wait, we're talking about fatso, right?
41, thanks for the semi-transcript. in all seriousness, you cant get any more douschebag than fatso and the dog in that interview. lidle came off as a real human being, and fatso and the dog came off as dellusional blowhards.
What they did that day was disrespectful and and AWFUL way to treat a human being. Morally, they should have been CANNED for what they did. They didn't do a TOUGH INTERVIEW. They used there wattage power to, purposely, humiliate and degrade a human being. When Lidle died, people became focased on that humiliation. If he was still alive, noone but a few diehard MMD haters would be calling them on it.
How nice would we all have felt right now,if we had called the station to protest Lidles treatment and demanded those two bafoons issue a public apology to Lidle under threat of their jobs?
But noone did. So they got away with yet ANOTHER despicable egotistical display. IF we don't call them on it, to the station, we ALLOW it.
Cory Lidle. Another reason why these guys deserve ANYTHING BAD that they get.
What a couple of dickheads. Credit Cory Lidle for keeping his temper and being the bigger man (so to speak). I'd love for Mike to say something obnoxious and arrogant like that with a hothead like Sidney Ponson.
Oh man, 41, if you can find the audio of the cory lidle interview you'll be my hero.
