Pick your poison

With the Mike and the Mad Dog show on vacation today and tomorrow, that means WFAN has to fill their time slot with other hosts. Today it's Joe Benigno and Evan Roberts. Tomorrow it's Adam the Bull (who???). Over the years, we've seen several others rotated around when Mike and Chris are away - names like Steve Somers, Richard Neer, Russ Salzberg, Tony Paige. So who do you like in that 1-6:30 slot when MMD are on vacation? What's your WFAN Dream Team when Mike and Chris are out sipping on Mai Tais?

Joe and Evan suck. Separately, they're tolerable (Joe much more than Evan) but they're not a good fit. Joe feels the need to get the pitiful "guy talk" going, and Evan can't shut up for 10 seconds -- when Joe starts one of his rants, Evan has to interrupt, or he's starting an argument for the sake of starting an argument.

Carlin is OK; Neer is boring but a good listen; Somers is OK but his borscht-belt humor gets old; Ed Randall is a baseball savant with an Imus-like habit of not listening to his callers but pretending he is; Boomer is boring and Carton is an unfunny, obnoxious prick; Malusis and Adam The Bull are nothing more than Francesa clones; and Tony Paige is amiable, but lets his callers ramble on far too long and doesn't seem to be too knowledgeable about any sport except boxing.

I've been listening to F-A-N since it came on the air. I go back with Imus to the 70's. I'm not a big fan of the morning duo. I think Carton is an ahole. Boomer is passable. True story. I saw Boomer get the beating of his life behind a bar in the early 80's. Boomer was still a student at Maryland. It happened at a bar in Islip Long Island called Hutleys. I usually turn over to Imus when I'm listening to radio in the AM. I think the midmorning crew doesn't matchup to Coleman and Simms when they were on. Russ Salzberg is not really my cup of tea either. I used to work midnights for years and Summers kept me going for years. I love his banter with the Ranger fans. He loves to mess with the Yankee fans. I think he's alot of fun. I enjoy Carlin when you can find him. Richard Neer I like in limited doses. I couldn't possibly listen to him day after day. Having said all this if MMD go the station might lose this listener. I don't listen to anything else on the station anymore. Check that I listen to the Giant games in the car. I'm a Yankee fan so I listen to WCBS radio. Susan and Sterling and that crew. Even if they are Yankee suckups. The bottom line is if the fan loses MMD I think the station is in serious trouble(nothing like going out on a limb)I hope the huge ego's can be checked at the door so the show can go on. There is a little bit of skeptic in me that wonders if this isn't a publicity stunt as well. I radio people will do anything to get people to listen. Well thanks for put this site out there. - KB from Sayville.

The Sweater!!!! Actually, Ollie was on the money for the most part. I love Somers, but enough already. I liked Neer for a while, but he made a comment about Gen X. Back to WNEW, you fuck. Joe is a contender. I don't know why Evan has a job. Bring back Wally Matthews over him.

At WEEI in Boston they bring often bring in former athletes. Some of them are crap and just plain homers, but some of them can be good. Right now, out of seemingly nowhere they have former utility infielder Lou "Framingham Lou" Merloni. He is quite good and knowledgeable in more sports than baseball. WFAN might want to consider thinking outside the bun and maybe audition some former athletes.

Which brings me to my nominee:
Lenny Dykstra

I would pair him with Phil Mushnick

If he is not dead, I would bring back John Starks for the 20/20

if we are going for former players, then how about the Bonilla Henderson show.. Bobby Bonilla and Rickey Henderson play poker on the radio and Bonilla threatens to kick the crap out of Bob Klapisch every hour?

Thats simple. Neer and Benigno. A calm well spoken knowledgable professional teamed with an excitable,UNBELIEVABLY KNOWLEDGEABLE host.

Sounds good to me.

I am for Merloni and Horn. Sam Horn that is.

Ollie, that was funny you should say that about Imus not listening to guests. I was listening to him the day after his Pacman Jones remark, and some guest was going on and on about how he supported Imus, how Imus wasn't a racist, etc., and Imus never said a word. I remember thinking "that ungrateful a-hole isn't even paying attention to this guy." And finally, when he awoke from his nap, Imus thanked him for being on the show, but didn't thank him for his support, probably because he had no idea what the guy actually said.

Right, DJ, you can always tell when Imus isn't listening. He's always interrupting every couple of minutes to announce that we're listening to the Don Imus Show. When he's completely silent, you know he's got his headphones off and is bitching at someone about something meaningless, or is telling his assistant to call some company and bully them into donating something like a fleet of Chevy Tahoe's to his tax-exempt vacation home -- oops, I mean "ranch."

Ed Randall does the same thing. He'll let a caller ramble on, and then thank them for the call but won't have a comment, and just go on to the next caller.

Ithink that a Simms and Jody Mac would bo great

Simms loves the movies, Mac loves the track
both lived/covered other cities so there knowledge is broad.
