It's Mike and the Mad Dog on the FAN...oh wait. No it's not. Today it's...wait for it...wait for it...Chris Carlin filling in for the boys. How in the world do Mike and Chris get the amount of vacation that they do every summer? I mean, it borders on insanity. I joked about it the other day that they have a teacher's vacation schedule without teacher's pay. But it really is true. The amount of time that they get off is ATROCIOUS. At least Russo is there a bit more. As soon as Saratoga Springs opens each season, you can bet that Mikey will go AWOL. How does WFAN allow this? Yes, Mike and Chris are powerful. But this whole idea that over the span of 2 months, they only do 1 or 2 shows together is a TERRIBLE job. So today it's Carlin, who will do his best to imitate Mike and Chris. Anyone listen to the opening 5 minutes of the Giants pre-season game last night? Within the first few plays, Carlin used the word "enigma" to describe someone. Hmmm, wonder where he got that word from. So onwards we go. Another day of no Mike and Chris. I guess we can just be glad summer break ends soon...

Did Carlin also use the word "scenario"? I notice more and more callers, whether subconsciously or (I hope) mocking him, using "scenario," "in a big spot," "spotty," "loosey goosey," and "I can't get too wrapped up in that."
Not that mocking Dog does much good; he doesn't seem to know or care.
steve...I think that so many of the WFAN guys listen all the time to Mike and Chris, whether they admit it or not and they start to adopt their terms.
Absolutely, first time, long time. I drive my girlfriend nuts (mimicking Mike) prefacing questions with, "Does it werry you, that..." Werry.
Carlin's nose tan is dark dark dark, he kisses Mike's posterior so much. Yikes.
If Neil Best has any credibility, this show might have a permanent vacation soon. They seriously do have way too much vacation time, especially considering they don't even have "real" jobs. Professional athletes' off-seasons aren't as long as this. And they take the worst time of the year to take their vacations.
This should be done in May to early July. What do you miss then in the world of NY sports? You've covered the Superbowl, Spring Training and the opening month of baseball. You've got the hockey and NBA finals, neither of which are big events in NY, especially nowadays. Mike could cover the NBA finals in an hour and talk about golf and horse racing, and Chris could do a hockey spot and cover whichever tennis major is going on at the time. They aren't missing a damned thing if they did this kind of vacation schedule during those two months.
There is just no excuse for the biggest NY sports radio talk show to be on vacation during the baseball trade deadline and throughout a month where each game gains more and more importance to BOTH NY baseball teams in terms of making or not making the playoffs.
The bottom line is these two fools have become jaded over the years and I know feel that both of them should be let go. Let some new blood come in. Get some hosts that will actually be around to discuss the events that NY fans care about.
Be sure to come on back soon, guys, so you can discuss Michael Phelps, the US Open (which I actually care about), and preseason football games...If only Chernoff had a pair of stones.
is anyone else as sick of seeing chris carlin everywhere you turn? hes on wfan like 10 hours a day, hes on every sny show, and does the giants games. youd think this guy looked like erin andrews or something.
hes terrible. TERRIBLE. he stinks!
BigJF, the reason they take so much time now is because August really doesn't have a ratings period for radio. May/June is the Spring ratings period which is very important. Stations base their advertising rates on the Spring and Fall ratings books.
But that doesn't give them an excuse to take the whole summer off. That'd be like the subways only running during rush hour.
Carlin sucks
Thanks for the clarification, 41. I was aware of the Fall sweeps, but didn't realize about the Spring period. Still, it is amazing how much time they get off.
Not only do they get all this vacation (vacation from what? Talking about sports a few hours a day?) but they also get every holiday off, federal and otherwise.
That's the problem with a personality driven show. It sucks if the main guys aren't there. Take Larry King, Anderson Cooper, Sean Hannity or Glenn Beck. These guys are not talented or compelling broadcasters. They just work their asses off - they never take an off day. It's become the exception to hear Mike and Chris on the air these days. That's not good.
Carlin off his rocker comparing Brett Favre to the great Mark Messier.
Fat bastard.
At least when Kim Jones is with Carlin, I can rub one out...I would like to fould Kim Jones with my carnal knowledge.
Is dog doing a solo show tomorrow? If so, Welcome to the "Stinks List," ian kennedy.
After his reaction tonight, Kennedy should go on the "stinks at life" list.
anonymous: Dog is not solo today. After Richard Neer, take one wild guess who is on this morning.
I don't mind them taking time off now - someone needs to home NOT watching the Olympics.
Can I talk to Francesca about the Rays yet?
Yeah, for a good 10 days now, but he has to actually show up to work first. Must be some life. You'd think he'd get sick of sitting around all day sipping diet coke and he'd use some of that big salary to hire a personal trainer.
