Mike Brings Favre to the Jets

Sometimes you listen to Mike Francesa and you just have to say WOW. His arrogance is off the charts. He just dropped this nugget while talking about the Jets bringing in Brett Favre..Be sure to look for this exchange in a Phil Mushnick column real soon...

Mike: Now I'm telling you when Mr. T (Mike Tannenbaum) was debating this, I spoke to him and had a chat with him. And he asked me what I thought. I said "Go get him. I wouldn't even think twice."

Kim Jones: If you said "don't" do you think the Jets would have still pursued him?

Mike: I don't think they would have made the decision by me but what I said was they asked me and I said "Go get him. I don't think there's any question, go get him." I said "it makes you better the day you get him."

Wow. Mike, that's priceless. You think the Jets would have gone ahead with the move if you didn't give your blessing. I mean, are you sure that you really believe that? I mean, you did tell them to "get get 'em" after all. By the way, do you think "Mr. T" likes having these conversations revealed on air?

Two things wrong here - 1) His use of Mr. T for the Jets GM is silly. It's not like that guy is anybody in this town. More people know Glen Sather or Mike Millbury than Tannenbaum. I'm ok if he speaks with Glen and calls him Slats by the way. 2) I don't remember Mike being so Gung Ho on Favre. Maybe Chris was more negative, but I seem to remember him saying that Favre wouldn't make the Jets a playoff team.

Gman..actually about a week before the deal a caller asked mike about the possibility of Favre to the Jets. Mike dismissed that as silly. Then a few days later, Mike started the campaign of bringing Favre over. I always wondered why he got behind that so much and it's now clear it was b/c of his "talk" with Mr. T.

I'm sure Mike gave his opinion, but no way Mr. T asked for it. He probably pities the fool.

Mike did a whole show back then on call-ins to vote whether to go get Favre or not, and I guarantee you the Jets were in on that whole thing, it just felt so contrived and not a typical Mike bit. The Jets wanted to feel out the fans on it, and you got to give credit to Mike for actually being able to deliver on something like that. Yes Mike is full of himself, yes the authors of this blog resent it, yes he definitely talks to Mike Tan., yes Mike Tan is a better nickname than Mr. T, and yes it all had to do with Favre coming here (except the nickname part). So though Mike is full of himself and not 100% responsible, I am going to have to go with the big guy on this one pal.

I knew I'd disagree with you at some point. Mike EMPHASISED that he was asked BUT HAD NO IMPACT. Nice try, but this nugget ain't true. That said, I've added your blog to my sidebr...

Bud...I was suggesting that Mike actually brought him to the Jets..I was making the point that Mike's ego is SO BIG that he to even mention that conversation. He wants people to know that when deciding if the Jets should trade for Favre, that Mr. T. called Mike for advice. He wants people to know that his opinion is THAT important. That's my point.

so Carton and Mike feel responsible for bringing Favre to the Jets...

Maybe this is the source of their feud?

I do recall said interview with Tannenbaum and Mike telling him he should go get Favre. But the idea that he should get any credit for that is a joke. I'm sure tons of people told Tannenbaum that in interviews at the time, since Favre was all the news. I do love Kim for calling him out on his arrogance though. He doesn't even realize his own ego anymore. That's like Kim saying she's responsible for a Yankee acquisition or for putting Joba in the rotation. She and Mike won't get along so cordially for much longer.

The Jets weren't going to go anywhere with Pennington, Mangini is overrated, Kellen Clemens is a mutt, and Brett Favre wanted to leave Green Bay. Mike thinks he was the only one who thought getting him might be a good idea? His ego is making him delusional.
