FRANCESA THE STORYTELLER

While we hammer away at Mike for his consistent arrogance and one-note drudgery, we sometimes miss the forest for the trees. If you really get down to it, Mike is an underrated wordsmith. On a daily basis, Francesa adroitly uses a potent mix of imagery, idioms and descriptive language. I've typed up some of his words from the first two segments:

'stand tall', 'crawling', 'swept aside', 'hammered', 'on the shelf','big thumpers', 'thunderbats', 'bloom is off the rose', 'full to the brim', 'red carpet invitation in solid gold', 'take him for a spin', 'double him to death', 'three ring circus'

I'm not saying he's Oscar Wilde or anything, but the fact of the matter is that he's very good at painting a picture of the day in sports. Sometimes that picture is a little crooked and potentially fraudulent. But it is interesting to look at nonetheless.

Please add any other turns of phrase uttered by the Pope of Letters today.

I've always liked the "singing for his supper" idiom.

Oscar Wilde was gay. Mike would be upset with the comparison. Although I doube Mike has ever heard of Bukowski or HST.

I think this post was to illuminate GMan's own eloquent writing style. Check out all the $.50 words peppered throughout that post!

I haven't listened today but he always make good use of "wonderful" when describing a player and he absolutely nails "clown" when describing a caller who disputes a Francessa observation.

Zing! Francessa - 1; World - 0

Excuse me...

Who are the Muts?

They're the team that beat the Sawx last night Loki

Not even a Mets fan and I can't stand (or believe) Mike's ripping on the Mets today about a) the HR on replay (which was 100% and obviously a HR) and b) the Santana v Youkilis thing. He is absurd. Can't give this team any credit

Mike just said that Girardi "lacks the simpatico that you would expect of a former player"

i have been away but what did mike say about the johan/youk thing? i wondered what he would do when 2 of his man crushes clashed...

Took Youk's side by saying that all he said was "Do you think that hurt me?" or "That didn't hurt me" or something like that. And that it was Johan's fault b/c he was first one to get riled up. Makes little to no sense to me

I havent been able to listen that much so maybe I missed further explanation of his point. I just heard that when he took a call around 2-3 I think it was

A. MLB should assess a count of 0-1 to Youk every time he goes up just because hes one of the ugliest guys in the league, I mean UGLY, AND because he is such a whiny bitch.

B. The Yanks have to be broken up and redesigned Mike, NOW. I mean why wait for AROD to come back or players start to gel a bit? Why wait? Start a sale, NOW!. Oh, and Youk is better looking than you, you putz.

Did anyone hear Mike's "theories". Mike never lets the 8th hitter beat him.

Mike theories on "speeding up the game"

Did anyone hear the caller say that posada was washed up and that it was time to move on from the "yankee core" of the late 90s. Mike had a titty attack and almost cried.

Did anyone hear the caller who said it was time to move on from the yankee "core" of the late 90s (specifically Posada)? Mike almost had a titty attack.

phil mushnick the other day wrote about a caller that mike dismissed re: the church missed 3rd base play in which angel pagan, who ended up on third before the appeal, could have tried to steal home before the next pitch and if the pitcher went to pick him off, that would be continuation of the play and the appeal would not be possible. mike apparently took the call, was annoyed at the caller for some reason and just hand waved him.

however, the caller was right. interesting article, interesting call. wouldve been interesting if fatso was mildy curious about it and followed through...
