The Cold Water Express

I caught just a few minutes of Mike'd Up today while in my car. But that little time was classic Francesa. For any Mets fan feeling a bit positive about last night's game in Atlanta, Mikey tossed some cold water on the Amazins victory. So after setting up the fact on Monday that the Mets had a huge 2 game series in Atlanta this week (where he pointed out that they are awful), Mike mostly dismissed last night's game by telling us that Atlanta isn't a good team. And that John Maine walked 6 batters. And that the Mets don't know what they are doing with Oliver Perez. And that Jose Reyes has only scored 10 runs this season. And that Ryan Church is going to lose his job to Sheffield. And that Daniel Murphy still can't play left field. And that this Japanese pitcher ain't going more than 5 innings. And that Jon Niese isn't pitching well in the minors. God knows what the big man would have said had the Mets lost last night. Thanks for providing some clarity today Mikey.

Mets are two back in the loss column from first place, yet last Friday, callers and Mike were already talking about if the Mets don't make the playoffs. They were discussing Jerry and Omar's future. How they could eventually break up the core. blah, blah, blah.

FTLT...Beltran is the most clutchiest guy on the team. That's really not too clutchy, you have to admit. Plus, I really doubt you can consider a Monday evening in Atlanta in May a big spot. I think Mike's right.

sean...the point is if Mike is going to act like that after a nice gutty Mets win, what's the point in ever analyzing anything? If a good win only brings out negative talk, then what's the point? No one is saying last night's game was of postseason caliber, but the point is at least back off a bit when they do things right even if it's just for one night.

FTLT...I was being sarcastic. Mike is miserable when the Mets play well, despite what he says on the air. He just got finished stating that Rollins, Howard and Utley are better than the Mets Big 3. He might be right but it's NOT because they have 2 subjective awards given out by the wildly erratic BBWAA. Mike's baseball analysis is elementary, at best.

All points are correct! We are living in Mikes world and it's his way or the highway. I choose the highway today.

Mikes relentless bashing of the Mets (even though often warranted) has been over the top since last year. Will he ever give it a break? He'll find fault with a Mets World series at this point.

Mike gave it to the Yanks a bit today but mainly because of his hatred for the Sox. He lost me with his immature and childish talk of throwing at batters. Yanks vs. Sox are always awesome games and we don't need Mike belittleing the games by his bullying chat. If it happens it happens-- let the players decide how the games are played.

I was also offended that Mike would discuss balls/strikes and how the Yanks and Girardi did'nt get their way for once. I'm glad I missed last nights game because I'm sure I would have puked listening to the Yanks announcers Whine like babies over it.

Sean - I don't think you were being sarcastic about Beltran and if you weren't...could ya please! Coming of a 2 HR night and he's leading the NL in hitting, I don't care if he's not clutch in May. Without Beltran, the Mets would be in worse shape.

The Tao of Mike has gotten to everyone. As if no one counts unless they are clutch. Lenny Harris was clutch, but I'd rather have Carlos. For a person to be clutch, their teammates need to put them into a position to be clutch.

Bigger gripe. I keep on hearing Mike talk about how the Red Sox have 'gotten lucky' with various moves or non-moves. Mike does like to talk out of both sides of his mouth. He'll end a discussion on the Red Sox by saying how they are the model franchise, but lead up to it about all these times they 'got lucky'. He is a bitter S.O.B.

GMan...I was only laying out the most likely of Mike's reasons to disparage win. In fact, he does rave about Beltran's clutch factor, citing all those HR's he hit in 2004 in Houston. IMO, clutch is a non-factor and is certainly overrated. It's almost entirely anecdotal and has the msm spout of about lesser players.

I've long thought Cashman was a horrible GM. He has constantly gotten less than value. Epstein is an excellent GM. Not as good as Beane, but excellent just the same. He has constantly gotten value for his moves. What Mike fails to realize...I think he actually doesn't understand this concept at all is that there is a value assigned to everything. Anything below set value can be justified and anything above, cannot. Epstein believes in this, Cashman does not.

Now, the Yanks are 0-5 against Bos this year and I think Mike might call in sick today.

Excellent analysis AwesomeSean.

You are spot on about Cashman vs. Epstein. Anyone can do what Cashman does with a blank check. It's the teams that have to work within a budget that should never be able to compete with the Yankees.

Even the Mets with a huge payroll themselves seem to fall short year after year because thay just won't spend the money it takes to put them over the top(this year is a perfect example). They always fall short when the time comes to close their wallet.

I disagree a bit regarding clutch performance though. A-Rod is the poster boy for lack of ability in the clutch and the Mets have no problem scoring runs early or putting runners on base but they fail to capitilize far too often leading to the tragedy of the last two seasons.

I also would'nt be surprised if Mike suddenly falls ill today but I'm looking forward to his open and his "awkward" take on things.

The loss by the Yanks to the Red Sox is a great excuse for Mike to ignore the Mets. Great effort out of Livan Hernandez last night. Why in the hell was Manuel pulling him out after 74 pitches? The guy who came let in a run.

Mike will belittle the Mets somehow!

Maybe he'll say that K-Rods performance was'nt clutch or that Delgado did'nt squeeze his glove with enough heart for the final out.

Mike will say something ignorant about the Braves. Trust me-- he'll find the negative somewhere.

Delgado should've dove for the ball, a la Pasta Diving Jeter.

he will prob complain about manuel using putz and k-rod too much.

actually, if he wants to be fair, he can spend the next two weeks talking about what a baby luis castillo is for slamming his glove down on the ground after the inning, like how he spent two weeks destroying reyes last year for doing the same thing.

here's hoping for consistency!

Where will Brett Favre fit into the proceedings today? if Favre hadn't been a Jet last year, Mike would have waved this off. But he'll probably address at length midday. I'm guessing that Russo opens with this. Although he's been very NBA heavy recently.
