Subway Series and the Idiots in Charge

Johnny Damon and the 2004 Sawx team were famously dubbed, "The Idiots." Catchy and self-deprecating, yes and memorable since that team whooped the Yanks 4 in a row in the ALCS and went on to bury the Cards in the Series. "The Idiots" were subsequently dismantled and the term of endearment was threatened with extinction. I am bringing it back now as I offer to you:

Joe Girardi and Jerry Manuel - The "New" Idiots

I was in a big hurry as a Mets fan to jettison Willie. I thought it was a bad hire and was happy to see him go. Jerry was a welcome change. My patience and the patience of all Mets fans is growing thin. A sac bunt in the 2nd last night? With Redding on the mound? Against Jamie Moyer? It's like hitting on 18 against a 7. Just when you think he's maximized his stupidity he pushes against all odds and hits a new level.

Girardi is no better...I am no Yankee fan so I need to hear from Loki and the other Texeira jersey wearing, A-Rod booing boys out there. How has Girardi screwed your season?

Now, what will Mike's take be on this weeks respective debacles? He will point to the Mets and their overall lack of clutchness. He'll discuss the merits of having 2 MVP's playing in the same infield with an obvious MVP type year from the left fielder and why this bodes poorly for the Mets in the coming months. He'll definitely touch on the Yankees bullpen deficiencies and the emergence of Youk as the best player since Bonds retired.

It's a grim day for NY baseball fans and Mike will do all he can to keep that fire raging. He'll promise hard interviews for "The New Idiots" but let's see if he delivers.

For me, I just pray that the Mets can squeak out a win this weekend. A sweep is gonna be tough to take.

Update Needed: This blubbering idiot called for a sac bunt in the 1st with a man on 2nd on a 2-0 count. Good grief.

I'm not sure what direction Mike will take today since he will be at Yankee stadium. He may choose to be a bit less abrasive since he'll be having guests from both teams and he has already isolated himself from the home teams this year.

That being said he must be steaming over the Red Sox sweep along with some bad play by Swisher, Damon, and an overall wasted good effort out of Sabathia.

Of course he'll belittle the Mets with odd statements about "how bizarre" their series was.

Manuel and Girardi are both in over their heads managing these big market teams. Joe is just "one of the boys" in the clubhouse and Jerry seems to be too high on life to manage properly. The guy the Mets put out their in the 10th inning looked like he had fear in his eyes and I knew we would lose that game.

I'm another Met fan hoping not to be swept by the Yanks but I think our fate is sealed and we'll be far out of first come Monday.

The Yanks on the other hand have exactly what the Doctor ordered with series against the Mets/Nats and can easily be back in first in a matter of days.

BTW- did anyone watch Carton and Boomer on SNY this morning? I'm not a huge fan of theirs but did find them entertaining and enjoyed Cartons impersonation of Mad Dog.

Mike is gonna kill Mets for not being clutch and once again heap praise on Phillies and on the Sawx. He will say how "devestating" both losses were for each team obviously. What I'm not sure of is if he will kill Sabathia for failing to come up big or if he will blame the bullpen / Girardi's strategy in the 8th inning. Thoughts?

can handle a post or two a week. You have my email, right? I have to type it in every time i comment here.

I said to my girlfriend Girardi needed to get Sabathia out of there after the first hit in the eighth.

He went out to the mound for about 1/2 of a second and the booth had a good discusion about why ask how the pitcher feels, the importance of body language, etc. Sabathia gives up another hit and out he goes.

IMO Girardi left him in too long! Seven strong innings was more than enough! His pitch count was up there. The bullpen would of had a better chance of pitching the eighth inning and holding a lead for MO if they started the inning with noone on base.

This day has joba needs to be in the pen written all over it

Apparently the only way to get treated with any respect from Mike is to say you're a high school baseball coach for 25 years

Jason said...

it wasnt girardi's fault. it was michael kay and all those other clowns in the booth that did the yanks in.

at the bottom of the 8th, they were heaping praise after praise after praise on cc sabathia. acting as if he was pitching in game 7 of the world series. the kind of forgot about talking about the game going on right before their eyes.

Whatdoyouhave...Exactly. I loved how he hit him with "Coach" when conversing. Classic.

I wish someone would send Mike a chart or a graph and explain "small sample size."

Whatdoyouhave? said...

AwesomeSean - completely agree. loved ihm dropping that "Coach" in there and you know he loved doing it himself. Classic Mike there

"The Red Sox stick"

Ugh. Please. I HATE this love for the Red Sox he has this year

by the way, been unable to listen today..what did mike say about the boston massacre?

Anonymous said...

FTLT...He says Yanks can't be taken seriously in playoff atmosphere type games. They're good against "C" bullpens and "D" closers but not against the elite. I only wish he'd thrown Brosius into the mix as another reason why they're 1-10 against Bos and PHI.

Jesus this interview is horrible.... Sticking true to his formula. MF: Statment..right? Manuel: Yeah. So boring and hard to listen to

gman26 said...

Whatdo - I think someone told Manuel just to agree with Mike every time. Maybe Willie. That's the path of least resistance in these interviews.

Anonymous said...

I agree! This interview is awful!

The interview sucked for all the reasons mentioned. In addition, Manuel's answers suck. He must know he's dead man walking but you'd think he'd at least use this chance to audition for another shot. Throwing Tatis and Shines under the bus and trying to bunt his way to a title. What a dolt.

Didn't McCarver get the memo? You're not supposed to disagree with Mike.

Anyone else hear Mike talk to Sweeney about the Yanks and the 2003 World Series and how they "should have won." He actually talks of the "03 series as if the Yanks did indeed win itl..."they just ran into a hot pitcher." But in Mike's mind, that pretty much means the Bombers won the Series anyway. He harkens back to that year as if it was the last year New York won it all..hey mike, by that same token, the Mets "should have won the Subway Series in 2000 if Armando didn't blow Game 1."

This link is for AccuScore, which is picking the Yanks over the Mets two out of three this weekend. It would be funny to call up Mike citing these statistics. His head might explode.

Are there any Mets fans who haven't blown their brains out yet? Or is this blog done for good now?

I think pretty much just Jerry and Luis Castillo are the idiots. As a Yankee fan, I'm still ok with Girardi.

I'm a Yanks fan and Girardi does annoy me. There was a period when he kept bringing Veras into games when the outcome was sitll in doubt and he failed with alarming consistency. It was approaching the relationship that Torre had with Felix Heredia a few years ago. It seems like he's finally taken a hint, but too late for my tastes.

He too in love with bunting. Against the Phils the Yanks were down by 1 in the bottom of the 9th, Cano on 2nd, 0 outs, and he had Melky trying to bunt in front of Matsui who was mired in one of those slumps he goes through when he looks like his first experience with baseball was hitting a ball off a tee at a bbq a couple weeks ago. Those slumps are betting longer and longer and his hot streaks shorter and shorter as he ages, but I digress. It was plain idiotic.

Another thing he does that annoys me is use Coke like he kills lefties. Coke is better against righties and he has a tendency to give up extra base hits against lefties. His slg % is very high vs. them.

He doesn't piss me off anywhere near as much as Cashman though. Angel Berroa is still on the team. LOL. There's nothing left to do but laught.
