Burney vs K-Rod

My first post. I kept hearing that Burney got in K-Rod's face over some comments. Has either been on their teams for more than 3 months? I think I could kick both of their asses.

Anyway, today's game will be the opening segment for both Mike and Dog, so I hope your are all watching. Meanwile the Stanley Cup Final Game 7 was awesome and Cotto fight rocked...But we won't be hearing about either on Monday.

4-0, Yankees. So much for Johan smoking the Yankees. You Mets fans crack me up...

Welcome Loki.

Pleased to be here.

Dont be so sure KBilly. Dog has been adamant about making his show not a NY show and has been very heavy on hockey for the last month. Depending on what happens in tonights NBA game, Dog's lead might very well be NHL or NBA over Mets/Yankees. Which, if that's the case, I hope you'll call in again and change the topic back to NY sports.

Loki, you sure are proving to be the stereotypical Yankee fan. How about you worry about your team and not the fans of a team the Yankees play 6 out of 162 games against.

Loki said...

Ryan T, I would have responded to your comment, but Burnett just got a double play so I don't have the time. Sorry.

A THRILLA FROM GODZILLLLA! And the Yankees take a 6 to nothing lead..

See ya later Johan.

Worst start of his Met career.

My day is made.

By the way, it's BRUNEY, and when he's actually healthy he is far better than Putz. Not bad for an arm picked off the scrap heap. And that little "confrontation" looked like Max Mini going toe to toe with Andre the Giant. I didn't realize how short K-Rod is. Bruney would've floored him.

bigjf said...

Ryan T., lose gracefully please. If this game was the other way around, the entire blog would be all over us Yankee fans.

KBilly...Welcome aboard. It's a great job. FTLT always treats for lunch and Gman is a real cut up in the office. I think you'll love it.

Anyway, the Bruney/Krod thing is ridonkulous. Eff em both for being stupid.

Loki...Score for you. Nice game by the NYY.

Ouch. Holy fucking shit.

We're only in the fifth inning and Jeter is already 4-4.

Well at least this loss won't sting like Friday night.

Before you get too excited Loki keep one thing in mind:

This ain't your Fathers Yankees. Nothing to be proud of after being swept by the Sox and almost losing 2 out 3 to what amounts to a Double A team.

That being said enjoy having bragging rights your team took 2 out of 3.

Rocking one of the best pitchers in the game for 9 runs? I take that as something to be proud of.

Today was a big win for the Yanks no doubt bigjf.

Unlike others I did'nt expect much out of Johan against the Yanks, but than again with the Yankees lineup I never expect them to lose to anyone. Theres actually some sadness to my statement in that baseball is 162 games and losses are to be expected.

The Yanks have taken their collection of dysfunctional contracts to a whole other level this year(paid for by insane ticket prices)which makes it surprising to me how they can ever be out of a game or post a loss? They have changed the game of baseball forever.

You should be proud of how the Yankees handled Johan today, but you also have to explain how they lost Saturday to a called up Triple A player?

Just saying.

Now back to the reality of real life.

As a Yankees fan, I needed a sweep to be satisfied with our most recent encounter with the Mets after the debacle in Boston. That said, I'm as happy as I can be considering the circumstances, since one win was perhaps the most crushing loss I have ever seen in an unimportant game (not playoffs or late in the year) and the other involved embarrassing Santana.

Dominant performance by Burnett, too. It's about time. Hopefully he goes on a 6 week tear in which he pitches like he's one of the top 5 starters in MLB. He usually does that once a season. He's been pretty terrible up until now.

Interesting spot for the Fat Man coming up. Can't bash Santana because he's been good this season and Mike loves him. Although, if he were a Yankee not named Santana who had those numbers and he pitched like that in his 1st game against Boston, he would be classed as unable to perform against good teams. Can't blame the Mets' core because they didn't really do anything bad. There's not much to say about the Yankees, but he's set up to harp on Joba to the pen and talk about how A-Rod isn't hitting. He can use the word "bizarre" 500 times when discussing the Friday night game. He should talk about how bad Pettitte has been, but I doubt that he will. He'll talk about Bruney vs. K-Rod. He will probably say Bruney is a hypocrite because of Joba, then go on a rant in which he criticizes excessive celebration in general.

$5 to the first person who calls either Mike or Dog and asks their opinion on the Iranian election results.

Jason said...

well, bruney got the job done. no one knew who the hell he was until after he started hating on krod in public.

wonder what his feelings are about his teammate joba, who celebrates like its the ninth inning or something when he used to just pitch the 8th.

fantasymixx.com said...

Which would leave them more flustered? - Asking about the Iranian election or asking them if they were surprised that Egypt pushed Brazil in a 4-3 loss today in the Confederations Cup? Then do a followup if they think Bob Bradley will finally start Freddy Adu today against Italy.

Ok JD, let me start by trying to explain how the Yanks lost to Nieve on Saturday. Pettitte couldn't throw strikes, the team played absolutely listless ball, and Nieve was on his game. Who knows, maybe the Mets have something there. It always boils down to pitching.

As for your argument on payroll and ticket prices, the Mets are not a poor team yet they passed up on a 4th year of Derek Lowe because Omar would rather retain Oliver Perez. That's been a great decision so far...And you can't complain about payroll and then dump your farm system plus big money to get some of the best pitchers in the game, Johan and K-Rod. Omar also brilliantly gave Castillo an extension.

As for ticket prices, the Mets don't exactly have what I'd call cheap tickets either. The lowest I could find for a Tuesday night against St. Louis was $15 in the nosebleeds. The one section where the Yankees blow the Mets away in price are those ridiculous Legends seats, which I can only imagine will be adjusted next year, provided the seats don't sell. Other sections in the stadium are actually quite reasonable.

It just kills me when Mets fans and Red Sox fans complain about the Yankees as though their respective teams are small market.

bigjf, i agree with your comment, but having a $230 million payroll is still quite different from a $135 million payroll. im sure the numbers arent the same with a lot of the yankee contracts coming off the books last winter, so i dont have the updated salaries, but im pretty sure the 230 and 135 mill are accurate for yanks and mets payroll respectively.

i dont understand the argument that because the mets are third in payroll, that they are even close to spending the amount of cash that the yanks throw around.

and you knock omar for not signing lowe, and signing castillo to an extension, but the only other viable 2b that was a free agent when castillo was signed was kaz matsui... and we know how well that signing wouldve gone over. it was either castillo, kaz, or no one. so out of context, sure the castillo signing was bad... but within its context, it was OKAY (at best).

but lets not also forget the amount of players that the yanks have signed by overpaying that really blew it in the city. i dont think i have to go through the list of at least ten names in the past 6 or so years that have completely flopped for the yanks.

that being said... boy, am i glad the mets didnt spent billions on a bandbox.

Jason said...

sorry, wasnt clear. i meant last years salaries were what i listed (i believe). i have no idea what this years salaries are.

Bigjf we are in agreement about ticket prices. You can also add the football Giants and Jets to the Mets/Yankees as well. These teams crossed the line this year and insulted the intelligence of the average person with the prices they are asking for tickets!

Omar gets no pass from me either. Even with the injuries Omar owed the Met fan a better product on the field with the payroll he spent.

We will have to agree to disagree on total payroll and how the teams operate in general.

The Mets and other teams operate within a budget(a large budget but a budget nonetheless)and the Mets always close the checkbook being a big bat or quality pitcher short which leads to questions in regards to their post season chances. The Yanks are able to ignore their budget and if anything usually are "heavy" in quality.

I say in all honesty with a bit of envy/jealousy that the Yankee offense is downright scary. From a pitchers perspective I don't see an easy out in the Yankee lineup and not only do they hit with average but they hit with power batters 1 thru 9. It amazes me.

To make matters worse-- once their rotation gets sorted out-- they will have quality pitching as well.

I hope you're right and Nieve works out well for the Mets, but we'll need a lot more help than that.

Jason, even if I give Omar a pass on Luis Castillo, my point is the Mets are not a small market team filled with nobodies. Sure, they don't spend nearly as much as the Yankees (which I will not apologize for), but it's not like they're in dire straits, even despite the whole Madoff scandal. The Mets have the money to retain their young stars like Wright and Reyes, while also having enough bank to get superstars like Santana, K-Rod, Beltran, Delgado, Wagner, Glavine, Pedro, and Piazza.

A lot was made of all the money the Yanks spent this off-season, but like you said they had a lot coming off the books and payroll is actually down this year lower than last year. They also have over $30 million coming off the books after this season (Damon, Matsui, Pettitte, Nady). I have a feeling that the Yankee payroll is going to continue to decrease as we move further away from the George Steinbrenner era. According to Cot's (http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/2005/01/new-york-yankees_111398168678860040.html), the payroll is well down from last year. Part of the reason the payroll got so high was from deferred payments on guys like Giambi (still getting $5M this year as a buyout). Also backloaded contracts keep the payroll up (Derek Jeter gets a raise next year, Robinson Cano and Nick Swisher also get substantial raises each year). Kei Igawa is collecting $4M a year in AAA. They have the highest paid infield and pitching staff in baseball, but at least it's not wasted on Randy Johnson, Carl Pavano, Jaret Wright, and Kevin Brown anymore.

So in review, the Yankee payroll is actually about $29 million less than you said, Jason, and the Met payroll is about $15 million more than you said. The Mets raised payroll by about $12 million this year from last year, and while they have guys like Delgado coming off the books, they also have backloaded contracts, meaning big raises for guys like Santana and Wright.

As for the billion dollar bandbox, I'm sure that will be addressed, but the Yankees have always had a hitter's park, just not to this extreme. Meanwhile, I wonder how much David Wright blames Bailout Field for his lack of homers so far this season...

d-wright is hitting just fine, sitting nicely around the .360 mark.

good to see a sane debate can be had without me being "eff the yanks!" and you being "26 rings!"

haha.
