Requiem for a Team

I had a (I thought, anyway) really great idea for a smashing post today. I was cultivating it in my limited brain last night as I waited for KRod to come in and lock down the W. I don't know if you heard but that didn't exactly happen. No, instead of the Mets picking up a subpar Johan and beginning this short series with a win, all hell broke loose and they wound up with, possibly, the worst loss of the season. My rational mind knew that the Mets weren't playoff bound but my irrational mind still held out some hope. Both sides of my mind are now utterly defeated and have hoisted the white flag high and for all to see. It's been a bad year and last night was essentially a summation of the season. They can now be assured to play out the string of the final 56 games in anonymity. The only way they'll be back in the news is if someone on the team marries Mike Piazza.

Good for the Yanks to get a win against the always tough Roy Halladay. They're now assured to go into the Boston series in first place. I'll still be rooting against them but they seem primed to make a big time run this year. By the way, there is no chance at all that Joba gets "shut down." They might reduce the workload a tad but that boy will be out there every 5th day from now until the Yankees' season ends.

I would have walked Pujols with the bases loaded. Dude has like 6 Grand Slams this season.

Maybe it's just me but the mets season ended in June and I saw it coming from a mile away.

Not so much because of the injuries or the at times terrible baseball played(lack of hitting, god awful defense, a mess of a starting rotation, etc) but because ownership clearly gave up on the team. Than of course they lie to the media and fans and claim all would be right in the world after the all star break. It was clearly BULLSHIT and I can't understand why anyone would actually pay to see this team.

I still keep an eye on the team and last night did'nt surprise me at all.

The Yankees have the best lineup in baseball history so it's just a waiting game till the postseason. It sucks for me since I refuse to watch a foregone conclusion. Watching a game for 2 1/2 hours knowing who will win is just a waste of my time.

I'm not sure what the Yanks will do with Joba comes the postseason. If their is anyway he could regain his "lights out" reliever status the Yanks would be tough to beat after the 7th inning with any kind of a lead. That can prove lethal comes October.

Football can't get here soon enough.

I was at the game last night. CitiField is a definite improvement over Shea, even though there's nothing wholly impressive there to me. Nor is there really much that screams Mets. But I enjoyed the game. No, I didn't act like a dick, but I did predict the blown save as K-Rod was warming up. I also would have walked in a run in that bases loaded spot. I was sitting way up in the 500-level but near homeplate, and even from there, that shot into the apple from Pujols was quite a sight to behold.

As for the Yanks, I agree that Joba will not be shut down this season. What I think will happen is they will give him extra days off in between starts whenever possible (not necessarily the best of ideas), and I think they would be willing to go beyond that 150 inning cap a bit. Unless they clinch a playoff spot in early September, I can't see suddenly babying him into 5 inning starts at a pitch count of 85-90! He's 23 years old and he knows that every pitch doesn't have to be 98 mph. For someone so inexperienced, he is really coming along quickly as a pitcher. But he will end up in the bullpen by the time the Yanks make the playoffs (I would be surprised if they missed again). The playoff rotation will likely be Sabathia, Burnett, Pettitte, with Hughes and Joba both in the bullpen. I know teams typically go with 4 starters by the LCS, but I would go with Sabathia on short rest at that point. That's why he's here. Hopefully he can figure out how to pitch in the playoffs, though.

bigjf,

I hope you did'nt have to pay for tickets to see that team.

My backyard is an improvement over Shea(LOL).

All that money spent and it's a generic stadium? Bad Job by the Mets once again. They should have represented their team better! get rid of the Jackie Robinson rotunda and give me some Blue and orange!

Did you check out the Shake Shack? Is it as good as they say or just a place to go to avoid the game?

I just got the movie reference in the headline...I hated that flick. Aronofski is the most over-rated director in Hollywood. At least M Knight Shamalayan made one good movie.

KBilly...Agreed. That movie did suck. Except for Jared Leto. That boy is dreamy. Tell you what else: The book sucked too. I still wonder why the hell I read that whole thing.

I just wiki'ed him. How the hell did he snag Rachel Wiesz? That chick is dope.

Rachel Wies ain't all that. I think she's kinda goofy looking. But I usually move on to the Next Big Thing.

She's no ScarJo or Salma, sure, but she still be hot. Plus, I kinda like the older woman style. Regardless, he should be cyberdating a thrice divorced mother of 5. That's all I'm saying.

JD, they were pretty cheap tickets. Worth going to see Pujols and all. I didn't buy any of the food, as I brought my own. So we didn't check out the shake shack. I heard it's good, but the lines are also long...but I didn't see for myself. My brother got a couple of slices of pizza, but he said they were nowhere near as good as in YS. Even the Jackie Robinson rotunda seemed like nothing more than a corridor with some nice pictures strewn about. Not nearly as impressive as I thought it would be, and I'm a big fan of Jackie Robinson's history.

Good deal bigjf.

I'm actually thinking of taking in a game later this month but since I'm not going to give my money to the Mets or Yankees I may check out the Phillies.

For what I would normally pay for 2 decent seats at Citi or Yankee stadium I can get a great seat at Citizens Bank and a hotel room for the weekend as well.

Of course I'd have to blend into the crowd since it's not too smart to be wearing Mets gear there.(LOL)
