Dog: Giants overpaid for Eli Manning

Dog thinks Eli Manning is a 6-10 NFL QB, not top 5. He loves Jerry Reese, but Ben Cheeseburger and Phillip Rivers are both much better. Eli is in the 2nd tier. But "Eli has that intangible, which is very, very big."

What Dog doesn't get is: inflation. In three years Eli won't be in the top 10 highest paid players in the NFL, especially if the NFL goes uncapped.

Apparently Bart Starr is the standard benchmark to which all NFL QBs should be held.

On a related note, would someone give me $97.5 million (35.5 million guaranteed)???

Once again, Dog opens his mouth without hardly any of the facts. I haven't looked at the details of the contract BUT the chances that Eli collects even 1/2 of this contract are remote. It will be re-worked at some point to give the Giants cap flex. Not to mention that Eli has a free pass around here for a long, long time. The Giants, I'm sure, paid market price with a tiny amount of premium based on NYG fans love for the shy boy from Ole Miss.

I think that is a lot of money to give Eli Manning even knowing he won't be among the top 10 paid QB's in a couple of years. For right now it just seems like a hefty price. It's not like they could let Manning go but it does seem a bit of a large price even though he probably won't see a whole lot of the money.

I don't know why Bart Starr is the standard to which all quarterbacks should be held.

By the way, who is measuring all other QB's to Bart Starr? If we want our QB's to look kickass, shouldn't we compare them to Jeff George?

BGF...The only way it's TOO much money is if they mishandled the cap and had to release or not have the ability to sign or re-sign a key piece. Barring that, it's fine. Unlike the other teams I root for (Mets, Knicks) the Giants are well run and I trust their personnel decisions.

Also, he'll never see most of that money anyway. NFL contracts just make good headlines. They're not realistic.

Wow Dog loves someone who is black. A shock.

All the Jake Haters down here started freaking out when he got his new contract. It generally won't mean much in a couple of years but gives salary cap relief.

It just looks like a lot of money for Eli Manning for some reason. Of course it will pay off if he has a good year.

Just noticed something that I'm sure Mike has been doing forever but it's really bothering me now - using analogies from other sports when interviewing someone.

Interviewing Cashman-
Mike: There is theoretically a time when you could see taking Damon and Swisher out and playing with Gardner, Melky and Hairston in the outfield late in game. (Not a question, btw.) Especially on a fast track. Especially on a fast track.
Cashman: Yes, we could do that. It gives Joe options. (The trade for Hairston)
Francesa: Especially on a fast track.

Later on, asking Cashman about the Yanks team - does he think they have the best team in the league now.

"Do you like your team? Do you like your hand? Do you feel you have a strong hand? A good hand?"

Ugh I can't stand Mike's campaign against Melky Cabrera

Excuse my continuous venting in honor of Mike's return

I definitely think the Giants overpaid for Eli Manning. I dont think he has reached elite quarterback status, and a lot of their success can be attributed to a strong defense and running game.
