The Open? Hughes or the Mets?

Before remembering the Mets had a day game I was fully prepared to hear that the Yankees pitching woes were lessened by half. Granted, Hughes went out there and gave the NYY a performance they needed and NYY fans should be enthused with their prospects going forward. However, I anticipate Mike blowing this out of proportion, putting Joba back in the pen and putting to rest talk of NYY pitching issues.

After the Mets lost in the manner they did I am not sure where he'll start. This game had all the factors that Mike loves: bad bullpen work, no timely hitting, "core" failure in the "clutch" and lack of run support for one of his boyfriends.

So, which way will he go? The new golden boy or the standard whipping boy?

My prediction: Mets doomed season with this "core"

There's your answer! He went with the Mets.

I'm a Met fan and it's killing me that the Muts are proving Fatso correct.

Mike is showing David Wright a lot of compassion by not piling on his awful start which now includes bad defense, but any listener has to know that Mike is eating the Mets demise up like it's an all you can eat never ending buffet table.

Hilarious radio - Panicked met fans calling in trying to trade Wright. Now Mike is trying to talk them off the ledge. He, of all people, is trying to play peacemaker.

GMan and JD...It was great radio. Mets fans throw the panic switch faster and more emphatically than their Bronx counterparts. It was amusing. I especially liked how Mike, Mr. Sac Bunt himself had to be Mets advocate against all fans clamoring for Mr. Wright to bunt the runners up. I only wish Mike would realize that wins in April are as important as wins in September.

Also, if I may be as so bold to say that Theo Epstein would trade Youk for Wright, straight up, in a NY minute. I like Youk but he's older than Wright, more expensive and if he's better, it's marginally better.

Aws - I agree about Youk. The other day Mike emphatically said he was the best player in the AL. This is news to me. Alex Rodriguez has been called a very good player from time-to-time. Not to mention, there is a guy on Youkilis' team that won the MVP last year. Call me crazy, but I would at least put him in the argument. Mike acts like Pedroia is a role player for the Sox.

GMan...Just for fun I tracked Youk and Wright at BP. It's actually not even that close. Wright is better in virtually every category, sabr and otherwise, than Youk. Plus, 4 years younger. The only reason that trade might ever get made is simply that Omar is, to be kind, a bad GM. The true trade would include another player, from the Sawx.

Shortened show, immediately following a bad Mets loss...I can't blame Mike for leading with the Mets (though I didn't listen today).

I do love that Joba went 7 innings, 1 run tonight. I'll listen tomorrow to see if tubby wants to try and explain to me again how Joba has no "bite" and why he'd be more valuable in the 8th inning than as a #1 starter. I missed the game tonight so I'll have to watch the replay, but from what I understand Joba's velocity was up and 1 run over 7 innings seems like plenty of "bite" to me.

While we're at it, Mike, why don't we make Sabathia a lefty specialist in the pen?

I can't believe that Fatcesa is being proven as a visionary, right in front of our eyes. Even as a Yankee fan, I thought that calls to break up the "core" were ridiculous. However, lately I am not as sure.

not sure that I'd call him a visionary...lots of mets fans weren't exactly ecstatic about their rotation after santana and their lack of adding another big bat to the lineup. as for breaking up the core, it's been 20 games. let's all take a deep breath before jumping off the ledge...as for mike, I will say this type of stuff is perfect for him and actually makes his show entertaining. but don't forget 2 days ago he was ready to throw the Yankees under the bus. things change quickly..

Anon - Can we follow Mike's advice and wait for Memorial Day before a rush to judgment? There are signs that he may be right, but Mike tends to treat the Mets and Yankees differently.

With the Mets, Mike sees them as living day-to-day. He loves coming on after a Mets blowup and declaring it a huge loss. One that they might not be able to recover from. With the Yankees however, everything is a trend. After last weekend's three-game loss to the Sox, it was an organizational tide that had taken place over the last 5 years. In his eyes, the Yankees can overcome big losses because of their history(save for Game four of the 2004 ALCS). However, the Mets are more fragile and full of multiple question marks? The Yanks are always just a good start away from turning things around.

Also, Mike is famous for talking out of both sides of his mouth and cherry picking stats to support his cause. He's been going on and on about how the Mets are further in trouble because Philly has gotten nothing from their rotation. He points to their W-L record as proof that even without good pitching they're still winning. The truth is that shows an aberration. If he thinks the Phillies can hit themselves to a winning record with the starting pitching remaining the same, he's dreaming.

My big problem with the Hair commercial is the line "opened to a burst of ecstatic reviews." A burst? That is bad copywriting.

Mike just informed us that Selena Roberts is not breaking the law by writing this ARod book. Selena will sleep well tonight knowing that Mike has cleared her of any criminal charges.

GMan...Mike also said the Mets need LoDuca and Valentin back. And Cliff Floyd. Let's throw in Trachsel too.

I am not clearing Selena of the charge of looking like a goblin, though.

yeah it's funny cause when Valentin was here, I never heard Mike rave about what a huge leader he was for the mets...also when Lo Duca was here, I heard Mike talk A LOT about what a big mouth Paulie had, but never heard much about his penchant for clutch hits...revisionist history is nice...not saying those guys were important, just that Mike never thought so when they were here...
